Sedona real estate owners are super lucky to have a great local library. Despite the changes and challenges brought by the pandemic, the library has managed to stay open. If your Sedona home could use a few good books, the library is the place to go. There are two locations--the Main Library at 3250 White Bear Road and Sedona Library in the Village at Bell Rock Plaza, Suite 51 A. Each location has its own hours for different services.

Browse the Stacks or Pick Up Holds to Take Back to Your Sedona Home

The Main Library is open for patrons to browse the stacks Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. During that time, patrons can also use the computers inside the library. Outside wi-fi access is available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Use the password splsplspl to access it.

If you’d rather just pick up your books quickly, you can also visit the library website anytime to find books and put them on hold. When your books are ready, you’ll get a notification. Come to the library for contactless pickup, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. You’ll have 10 days to pick up your books from the time they’re ready.

At Sedona Library in the Village (SPL-V), they’re open Thursday and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During those times, contactless holds pickups are available. There are three public computers for use for 30 minutes at a time. Wi-fi is available, too. Check with staff for the password.

In addition to books, you can check out Chromebooks and wi-fi hotspots if you don’t have good internet at your Sedona real estate. Anyone interested in birds can check out a bird watching kit, which includes binoculars, books, maps, games, and a bird call identifier.

The library has some great online tools, too. Check out electronic versions of books, audiobooks, and periodicals. There are special collections for kids of animated picture books.

Anyone interested in astronomy will enjoy the I Heart Pluto Festival and attend for free. It started on Saturday, February 13th. Since it is entirely virtual, all previous sessions are available to watch on YouTube in Sedona homes. The next live session will be held on Tuesday, February 16th at 6 p.m. Join Dr. Will Grundy for a talk entitled “Pluto After New Horizons”. Dr. Grundy will discuss the implications of the discovery that Pluto is a complex double planet after the flyby by the New Horizon.

On Wednesday, February 17th, Jim and Charlene Christy will welcome viewers to a tour of the U.S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station (NOFS). The highlight of the tour will be the telescope that discovered Pluto’s moon Charon, which Jim Christy discovered in 1978. Interestingly, NOFS is just a few miles away from the site where Clyde Tombaugh first found Pluto in 1930.

Families with kids can tune in from Sedona homes on Thursday, February 18th from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Kids will enjoy fun activities just for them, led by Lowell Observatory educators. They’ll hear the story of Venetia Burney, who at just 11 years old came up with Pluto’s name. Kids will also see the educators use liquid nitrogen to recreate the surface conditions of Pluto. Next, at 6 p.m., viewers can learn about Clyde Tombaugh and how he discovered Pluto. Lowell Observatory Historian Kevin Schindler will give the talk. The last event of the festival will be an open discussion at 7 p.m. Alden Tombaugh, Clyde’s son, will be one of the speakers. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Jeff Hall.

There are six basins that cover a total of 12.2 acres. The water in these basins comes from the Sedona Wastewater Treatment facility, which serves a huge number of people living in Sedona. The water is treated to A+ effluent quality standards. This is the highest in Arizona regulations. The wastewater is treated through biological treatment, clarification, filtration, and ultra-violet disinfection. These wetlands are designed to increase the amount of effluent evaporation. In addition to these goals, the wetlands have been designed to serve as a habitat for numerous wetland species, include a variety of native plants and trees, and be a place for trail walking and wildlife viewing.

The basins range from shallow to four feet deep and many islands have been constructed to provide safe places for animals to breed. This preserve is a terrific place to bird watch. Bring your binoculars and always keep your distance to avoid disturbing wildlife. Also watch for seasonal birding field trips to the wetlands. These are free and listed at the Audubon website’s calendar of events. 

Whether you visit the preserve with a group or on your own, please stay on designated trails, do not feed the birds or any other animals, and keep your dogs on a leash and only on designated trails.
