There are many beautiful natural areas to explore while living in Sedona. Many of these natural areas include stunning red rocks and desert landscapes, but there are also gorgeous wetlands in Sedona. Go check them out and visit the Sedona Wetlands Preserve. This beautiful preserve spans nearly 27 acres and is located at 7500 W. SR 89A in Sedona, between mile markers 365 and 366.
There are six basins that cover a total of 12.2 acres. The water in these basins comes from the Sedona Wastewater Treatment facility, which serves a huge number of people living in Sedona. The water is treated to A+ effluent quality standards. This is the highest in Arizona regulations. The wastewater is treated through biological treatment, clarification, filtration, and ultra-violet disinfection. These wetlands are designed to increase the amount of effluent evaporation. In addition to these goals, the wetlands have been designed to serve as a habitat for numerous wetland species, include a variety of native plants and trees, and be a place for trail walking and wildlife viewing.
Bring Binoculars from Your Sedona Home to Observe Wildlife Safely
The basins range from shallow to four feet deep and many islands have been constructed to provide safe places for animals to breed. This preserve is a terrific place to bird watch. Bring your binoculars and always keep your distance to avoid disturbing wildlife. Also watch for seasonal birding field trips to the wetlands. These are free and listed at the Audubon website’s calendar of events.
Whether you visit the preserve with a group or on your own, please stay on designated trails, do not feed the birds or any other animals, and keep your dogs on a leash and only on designated trails. Following these rules helps to protect the plants and animals living here. All who call Sedona home are invited to to learn more about the Sedona Wetlands Preserve online and plan a visit.
